The Case. Team Intellicient was engaged to scope and document solutions for a long-standing problem in an oilfield services drilling organization. Our group performed requirements analysis and business development for oilfield services drilling to address detailed project goals, performance measures, assumptions, constraints, and alternative options. The Problem. Our client was undergoing tremendous growth in sales across the globe. To prepare a strategy to keep the quality of training services commensurate with that of the sites, there needed to exist an ability to more efficiently deliver training services. These services include: training quote generation, forecasting of training revenue, and training schedule coordination. With a growing demand (fueled largely by acquisitions) for trainers around the globe (across nine locations) the need to improve current training processes and gain deeper data insights is more important. Processes to deliver customer training quotes were largely manual, broken across disparate systems, and submitted via email. The enterprise needed to reduce the effort required by Training Coordinators to support the process through spreadsheet management. Scheduling of training was inaccurate as it is currently not based on data but on invalid qualitative assumptions of customer needs. In order to improve training strategy, a move to a data architecture that will allow entry and access to all training data for greater analytics capabilities was outlined. Anticipated Outcomes. Moving to a true analytics architecture would allow the organization to have centralized management and administration of training data/metrics. This will enable a more effective development training strategy and improve training process efficiency, which includes customer quote delivery, revenue forecasting, and training coordination. This will allow extraction of accurate training analytics, and therefore be used to reduce costs associated with the effort currently required to manage forecasting tasks and training coordination. The Intellicient Recommendation. Various options and alternatives were analyzed to determine the best way to leverage technology and process improvement to improve training processes and reduce labor costs within the group. We recommended to methodically migrate the processes (used to generate training quotes & training coordination) to a set of processes and data architecture that will preserve data integrity. It will therefore allow adequate time to train all stakeholders and employees how to utilize the architecture to gain better access to data used to make key decisions. The data architecture would be accompanied by a web-based BI reporting tool that is compatible with all other current IT systems and will improve the efficiency and accuracy of reporting throughout the business unit. Business Intelligence decisions are moving from the boardroom to the front lines. Business Intelligence decisions are impacting more and more decisions – especially on the front lines, according to Boris Evelson, a Forrester Research analyst. The reason for this, as stated in a recent article, is that operational BI is moving toward the front lines with “offerings that integrate data and process dashboards” as well as “event-driven systems that initiate a business process based on certain data conditions.” BI is moving toward a self-service delivery model. Instead of just dashboards and reporting – users can pull reports and mine data to make better decisions. These reports are being used to predict trends and make decisions. Streamlining data with BI tools can help make this possible. |
In a broad sense, BI business value can be seen as a matter of determining how an organization can use BI to: Improve management processes - such as planning, controlling, measuring, monitoring, and/or changing - so that management can increase revenues, reduce costs, or both. Improve operational processes such as fraud detection, sales campaign execution, customer order processing, purchasing, and/or accounts payable processing so that the business can increase revenues, reduce costs or both. |
