The Case and Introduction. Intellicient™ was enlisted to collaborate with Facilities Services executive team to leverage their strategic plan to assess BI maturity, build a BI Road Map, and technical platform to allow the organization to achieve a more data-driven culture. The organization utilized a strategic plan for its 3 year market growth outlook. They owned an internally-developed safety and labor activity system built on a Saas model primed to serve as the core system for the organization – given their business is 80% labor. This system tracked employee data but employee information resides in the Saas system. Accounting, Timekeeping, and HR systems that are not integrated – resulting in inaccurate data.. The existing reporting functions were comprehensive but in addition to inaccurate data, the dashboards (while offering filtering capabilities) are not interactive and do not deliver drill-down or ready access to data detail. Users were categorized in three areas: Executive team, Regional Safety Management, and Safety Engineers. The lack of reporting functionality limited the ability of Executive users to build market strategy and extract accurate insights. Safety Engineers hand wrote site data while not online then transcribe the data when online again. This led to duplication of effort and missing/inaccurate data. Regional Safety Managers could not make adjustments in labor activity due to the incomplete data originated with Engineers. For the Engineers that do have mobile devices the system did not render correctly, making use of the system difficult. To utilize the tool strategically a solution was desired to resolve the existing problems with lack of Data Consolidation, poor Data Quality, low User Adoption, and lack of: Scalability, [Data and Mobile BI] Platform Standardization, and System Support. Data Quality was addressed through development of a BI Data Warehouse and Data Quality / Data Cleansing methods. Improvement of User Adoption was achieved through execution of a Communication Plan as well involving the organization through the project (Interviews, BICC committees, project roles, agile methods). A custom web-based front-end and integrated BI reporting tool (with proven ability on mobile platforms) was designed against the Data Warehouse to address mobile access and allow more control of the solution. This architecture will 1) provide scalability, 2) allow elimination dependence on their cloud provider for software modifications, and 3) allow the system to be rendered across multiple browser and mobile platforms – satisfying the need for Platform Standardization. System Support was delivered through 1) detailed technical and functional documentation of the system and 2 ) integrating a dedicated Help Desk. |
Business Intelligence decisions are moving from the boardroom to the front lines. Business Intelligence decisions are impacting more and more decisions – especially on the front lines, according to Boris Evelson, a Forrester Research analyst. The reason for this, as stated in a recent article, is that operational BI is moving toward the front lines with “offerings that integrate data and process dashboards” as well as “event-driven systems that initiate a business process based on certain data conditions.” BI is moving toward a self-service delivery model. Instead of just dashboards and reporting – users can pull reports and mine data to make better decisions. These reports are being used to predict trends and make decisions. Streamlining data with BI tools can help make this possible. |
In a broad sense, BI business value can be seen as a matter of determining how an organization can use BI to: Improve management processes - such as planning, controlling, measuring, monitoring, and/or changing - so that management can increase revenues, reduce costs, or both. Improve operational processes such as fraud detection, sales campaign execution, customer order processing, purchasing, and/or accounts payable processing so that the business can increase revenues, reduce costs or both. |
